The Importance of Being Mindful

One of the classes that has been most influential on me thus far at Pacific was my Educational Psychology class that I took over the summer. I am interested in psychology, as well as positive psychology in particular. Can a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset make a difference? What kind of difference do these mindsets ultimately make?

The first video is called the .b project. The .b simply stands for "breathe." Students can text each other a simple .b as a reminder to unplug, relax, and take a beat from their busy day. Given that students are glued to their smartphones 24-7, I think it is a good reminder for them.

The next video expands on the concept of growth versus fixed mindsets by adding a new term: grit. A growth mindset simply says that through your efforts, not fixed abilities, you can accomplish virtually anything you set your mind to. Grit is the concept of sticking with challenges. Therefore, we need to not only teach our students to have a growth mindset-we need to teach them the value of grit.
